The fastest and slowest IRONMAN 70.3 courses, measured on the same athletes

Everyone says Nice is slow and Erkner is fast. We measured it: 50,000 athletes who raced two or more 70.3 courses since 2024, compared against themselves. The spread between the fastest and slowest course is 66 minutes.

Ask anyone who has raced both and they will tell you Nice is slow and Erkner is fast. Ask them how much, and they will guess. Median finish times do not answer it either: Augusta's median is 6:12 and Venice-Jesolo's is 5:22, but that says more about who shows up than about the roads.

So we did what marathon statisticians do when they compare Boston with Berlin. We took every IRONMAN 70.3 since June 2024 — 305 editions, 132 distinct courses — found the 50,361 athletes who finished two or more different courses, and compared each of them against themselves. If you went 5:10 in Warsaw and 5:40 in Nice, that 30 minutes is information about Nice and Warsaw, not about you. Do that fifty thousand times and the courses separate.

How to read the numbers

Each course gets an effect relative to the average 70.3: how much slower or faster the same athlete goes there. We show it as a percentage and as minutes for an athlete whose average-course time is 5:00. The swim, bike and run columns are the same model run on each leg separately, so you can see where a course takes its time.

Two numbers are shown for context only. "Median finish" is the plain median of all finishers, the figure everyone quotes, and it is there to show how misleading it is. "Non-finish" is the share of starters who did not reach the line.

Erkner, Leipzig and Tours are what a fast course looks like: flat bike, flat run, cool air, and the effect spread evenly across all three legs. Monterrey and Türkiye are fast for a different reason: the bike. Both give back 9 percent on the bike alone.

Augusta and North Carolina are the interesting ones. Their medians are over six hours, among the slowest in the table, yet the same athlete goes 17 minutes faster there than on an average course. The swim column explains it: minus 25 and minus 17 percent, river swims with the current. The field is slow; the course is quick.

Nice is the slowest 70.3 in the world by a distance, and it is entirely the bike: plus 24 percent on the climb to the Col de Vence and back, with the swim and run close to average. Marbella is the same story with a hard sea swim on top. For a 5:00 athlete, Nice costs 43 minutes and Erkner gives back 23, so the spread between the two ends of the table is 66 minutes for the same person.

Below the mountain courses the pattern changes. Hawaii, Subic Bay, Puerto Princesa, Los Cabos and San Salvador are not hilly; they are hot. Their time goes on the run, 8 to 15 percent, and it shows in the non-finish column too: a quarter of starters in Hawaii and Acapulco do not finish, against 4 to 6 percent in Leipzig, Venice or Tours.

Where the time goes

The bike decides the course. The four biggest bike penalties — Nice, Marbella, San Salvador, Rwanda — are the four slowest courses overall, and Swansea and Alcúdia-Mallorca, next on the bike, are both in the slowest 20. On the fast end, Tours, Monterrey, Warsaw and Türkiye all gain 9 to 10 percent on the bike. The bike is half the race, and it is the leg where terrain can move the time by a quarter.

Heat shows on the run. Every course with a run penalty above 10 percent is in a hot climate: Puerto Princesa, Subic Bay, Rockford in June, Desaru Coast, Rwanda, Cozumel. The bike on those courses is often average or even fast. If you are choosing a race for a personal best, a flat course in a hot place is not a fast course.

The swim is where the medians lie. Augusta, North Carolina, Erkner, Florianopolis and Agadir all gain 9 to 25 percent on the swim: current, a lake with no chop, or a short course in practice. A 20-minute swim does wonders for the median and tells you nothing about the bike and run.

What this is not

It is not a ranking of race quality, and it is not a prediction for one particular day. Each course pools its editions since 2024, so a venue with a windy year and a calm year gets the average of both. Editions where the swim was shortened or cancelled are excluded, 44 of them, as is any course with fewer than 40 repeat athletes. Only finishers count, which makes the hardest courses look slightly easier than they are: the people who quit in the heat are not in the comparison.

The model is simple on purpose: the log of each finish time is an athlete term plus a course term, fitted by alternating means until it stops moving. Athlete fitness changing between races averages out across fifty thousand people; it does not bias one course unless its field systematically races it at a different point in the season, which is a real effect for early-season and late-season races and part of what "fast" means in practice.

Method and sources

Results are the official IRONMAN results for every 70.3 event dated 1 June 2024 or later, 305 editions in total, matched across races by IRONMAN's own athlete identifier. Relay, professional and open-division entries are excluded, as are duathlon and bike-run editions and editions whose median swim time was more than 25 percent off the global median. Course names are pooled across editions and across renamings (Erkner and Erkner Berlin-Brandenburg are one course; so are Turkey and Türkiye). The World Championship editions are excluded from the ranking because their field is not comparable, though for the record the 2024 and 2025 championship courses would sit between Hawaii and Marbella.
